Purple is an underused colour when it comes to interior design, which is a shame. It encompasses everything from deep aubergine through to the softest of lavenders, making it extremely versatile in terms of the mood you want to create.

Historically, purple was the “colour of kings”. Purple dyes were difficult to extract and so extremely expensive, which meant that wearing purple was a sign of wealth and luxury. Many royal robes were made from dark purple.

Lighter purples, such as lavender, are softer, more romantic, and can be used to create a warm and relaxing environment in your home. They’re particularly good to use in the bedroom, where you potentially want to achieve a comfortable but inviting space.

Although occasionally feature walls in darker shades of purple are used in design, generally darker shades of purple are used as accent colours in styling. Purple can also be used to create a mysterious, alluring feel, particularly in a larger space.

Alternatively, they can provide a bright spot of colour to give your room a buzz of energy without overwhelming it. Purple flowers are particularly good for this purpose, but cushions and other accessories can achieve the same effect.

So if you’re looking for a way to make your interior space a little different to the mainstream, achieving a mix of mystery and romance, then purple is a great choice.
