In smaller spaces, you need to be much more selective about what you choose to display if your aim is to make the proportions feel bigger. Walls, shelves, dressers, countertops and computer desks can all benefit from a critical “do I need this?” scan.

Select a few items you cherish to place in the room rather than a smorgasbord of your favourites. Once you’ve arranged these items in the room, remove one or two until you’ve achieved the perfect balance between visual interest and restraint.

Concentrate that decor in a few spaces, like an accent wall, rather than spreading it out all over. Leaving some surfaces and walls open will visually elongate the room.

Be sure to decorate your space with intention and don’t be afraid of some dead space. A bunch of small things scattered around can feel more like clutter than a few larger statement pieces.

The key is to decorate your space with restraint. Less is more!
