Cushions are a great way to add style, texture, colour and more to any room. In part 1 we looked at deciding on what size cushion to use and how many. Now you’ve got some cushions, it’s time to focus on how to group them on your sofa.
1. Minimalist
This is one for the minimalists out there, and often works well in an ultra-modern setting as a result. At its most basic, put 2 identical cushions side by side in the centre of the sofa, both equally distant from the centre. That’s it.
For complete minimalism, the cushions can match the sofa in both colour and fabric, but you can also have them in a softer shade or contrasting colour if you want to draw attention to them or tie them in with other elements of the room.
2. Balanced
Take the minimalist approach and build on it! Instead of having one cushion on either side of the middle, go with 2, and to really break out of minimalism, use 2 different colours or fabrics. So you end up with two groups of two cushions.
And if you really want to go all out, try adding a smaller cushion in front, such as a bolster, in a patterned fabric to match the pairs. Or, create your balanced pairs with different shapes, such as one square and one round.
As long as there’s two equal groups of cushions on either side of the centre of the sofa, you can style them any way you like to create the balanced effect.
