Images of beds that have been styled in preparation for a photo shoot are everywhere – from the razor sharp lines of a well-made bed to the boisterous enthusiasm of cascading pillows and plumped-up doonas. One thing they almost all share is the latest “must-have” styling accessory – a throw.
Now, I don’t know about you, but the mysteries of the throw elude me. I can just about manage a neatly folded strip across the base of my bed. But every time I try to style a throw in that “just casually dropped on the foot of the bed” way that’s so popular, it looks like a crumpled mess. So I figured the time had come to unlock the mysteries of styling a throw.
Let’s take a look at some of the most popular and simplest ways to achieve a styled look.
Straight Lines
The easiest style, as I mentioned above, is to simply fold your throw blanket horizontally, and place it neatly in a straight line across the foot of the bed. This works really well when the throw picks up the colour in one or more of the pillows and cushions on the bed.
If you’re feeling brave, then after folding it neatly in a rectangle you can drape it over a corner at the foot of the bed. This gives a slightly asymmetrical feel to the bed, and again, is a great way to pick up a colour from the bed’s theme. It works particularly well if your throw has a textural element like tassels or fringe.
Do you want to take this to throw-styling ninja level? Another straight line trick is to fold multiple throws together so the different layers are showing. Or try laying the folded throws one over the other but slightly out of line, making it easy to see part of each one.
Triangles
If triangles are more your thing, you can fold your throw in a triangle and lay it over one of the bottom corners of the bed, giving a crisp, tailored look. And if you want something a bit more relaxed, casually toss your throw across a corner in a triangle shape. I’m still working on my casual toss style!
So there you have it – the basics of styling your bed throw. Now get folding and draping!
