Current interior design trends are very minimalist, both in terms of objects in the room and the amount of colour used. Neutral, natural tones and textures abound. Which leaves you room at risk of being a tad… boring.
So adding a splash of colour with a vignette is a great way to add some energy to a room. It can also be a great way to draw the eye to it as a focal point, taking attention away from another, less appealing aspect of the room.
One easy way to work more colour into a room with a vignette is to pick up any shades already being used and add complementary colours in the vignette. As an example, if there’s a nice pink in a piece of artwork or a cushion, pick that up and expand on it in your vignette.
That doesn’t work so well in a room which doesn’t already have some colour though, in which case you can pick whichever colour you want for your vignette. It can be as easy as choosing some books with colourful spines. Or, you can really make a feature of your vignette and use a strong, bold colour that can’t be ignored.
Remember, too, to keep your vignette balanced. Don’t put all the coloured items at one end – spread them around and, unless you’re going for a bold statement, mix the coloured items with other, more neutral pieces.
And when in doubt, add nature! Plants work well within almost any setting, and the use of flowers allows you to choose almost any colour to either stand out or blend into your room’s colour scheme.
