What is a Vignette?

The obvious question is – what is a vignette? Essentially it’s a group of items placed on a table or surface in such a way that they look like they’re meant to be there for style purposes, rather than because someone hasn’t tidied up today.

Let’s work through the basic things you need to think about when styling a vignette.

How Many Objects?

One thing most stylists agree on is that our eyes like to look at things in groups of odd numbers. So, groups of 3, 5, 7 and so on.

Theme

Next up, when you’re styling a vignette, you should think about the theme of the objects you are using. You could use items from the beach, a collection of vases, perhaps some pretty lanterns if you’re styling an outdoor table.

Colour

Colour is next. Often what you want to do is tie the colour of your objects back to some other point in the room to give a sense of cohesion about your vignette. So if for example you had a print on the wall with some purple in it, it would work well to have some purple in your vignette to tie them together.

Variation in Height and Size

Another thing to aim for is a variation in height or size of the objects. This gives the eye something to look at, so that everything isn’t the same. Sometimes you can achieve that through height. As an example, you could have three lanterns that are the same design, but if they were three different heights or sizes, you’d get that variation.

Of course, sometimes the best thing about rules is breaking them!
