“Vignette” is a popular term when it comes to styling your home, and essentially it’s used to describe a small group of objects. The vignette should create an attractive focal point to draw the eye, and potentially tell a story.
So the question is – where should you put your vignette? Location is important, as there’s a fine line between creating a vignette and a surface looking like you need to have a tidy up.
Basically, any flat surface can work. Common locations are the coffee table, hall table, mantelpiece, bedside table, bathroom bench and more. Be wary of having more than one vignette in the room unless it’s big enough to sustain multiple focal points, each in a clearly defined area.
Start by clearing off everything that’s already on the surface. That way you can get a feel for the size and shape you have to work with. If any items need to stay on the suface, for example a soap dispenser in the bathroom, then keep it handy. Chances are you can find a way to add it into the vignette if you use your imagination.
If there’s wall space directly behind the surface you’re working with, factor that into your assessment. After all, anything that isn’t permanently fixed to the wall can be moved. A carefully selected piece of art work can give an uplift in size to your vignette, which can be handy if you’re working with a small table in a big space.
Light is also important, given that the vignette is designed to be a focal point. Lamps are a great way to add both style and illumination, or at night you could use a candle that you’ve incorporated into your vignette.
Time to start assessing every surface in your house for vignette potential!
