If you’re ready to redesign your space, then it’s time to start scheming – the colour scheme kind of scheming, not the mwahahaha! evil villain kind. When it comes to choosing a colour scheme, one of the simplest is to use complementary colours from the colour wheel.

Complementary colours are those that sit opposite each other on the colour wheel. Often one of the colours is a primary colour, but it doesn’t have to be. Some examples would be orange and blue, or yellow and purple.

One colour generally acts as the dominant shade, with the other used as an accent colour. Because of the sharp difference in colour, they can really make a space pop, but be careful not to overdo it – just think of the perennial Christmas nightmare that is the overwhelming flood of red and green.

By predominantly using neutrals in your styling, your eye has a place to rest, and this prevents the complementary colours from becoming too much. Used sparingly, perhaps in a particular area of the room or to draw attention to a specific design element, you’ll find they turn what could be a bland room into something stylish and memorable. So don’t be scared to break out of blandness and add some complementary colours to your space to make it zing!
